Suncorp confirmed as Naming Rights Sponsor of the Queensland Cyclones

Wheelchair Rugby Queensland (WRQ) through Wheelchair Rugby Australia (WRA) is excited to announce Suncorp as the Naming Rights sponsor of the Queensland Cyclones for the remainder of the 2024 season.

The announcement is a significant step forward for the Cyclones, securing one of the most iconic brands in Queensland to support the efforts of the team, who many wheelchair rugby pundits are tipping to feature heavily among the medals at the Wheelchair Rugby National Championship in May.

Australian Steelers captain Chris Bond will captain the Cyclones at the pinnacle event, in a side that features fellow Australian player’s Ella Sabljak, Beau Vernon and Josh Nicholson, among others.

Speaking on the sponsorship, Wheelchair Rugby Australia’s CEO, Chris Nay, said “The significance of Suncorp’s support cannot be understated. For the first time in four (4) years the National Championship will be held outside of Queensland, meaning significant additional cost to the program to attend in Adelaide.”

“Suncorp’s support of what would be considered the premier wheelchair rugby program in Australia right now is a major step forward for our entire Queensland community. Securing a sponsor with such an outstanding reputation to support the team at the Wheelchair Rugby National Championship and beyond is momentous for our program and I know the team is looking forward to representing them on the national stage.”

Suncorp Group’s Executive General Manager Brand and Customer Experience Mim Haysom said: “We are delighted to support the Cyclones as they represent Queensland at the National Championship. As a proud Queensland brand, Suncorp is committed to supporting the community across the Sunshine State, including our athletes. Wheelchair rugby is an intense, fast-paced and exciting sport to watch, with participants demonstrating extraordinary athleticism, and the Nationals will provide some great action for spectators.”

The Suncorp Queensland Cyclones will take to the court for the first time at The Wheelchair Rugby National Championship in May, set to be held in Adelaide for the first time since 1995.
